The morning of her sixteenth birthday, Lana woke with a smile on her face.
This, today, was the day she’d been waiting for months. Well, for years, but it had become a more urgent waiting since her father had set that ridiculous deadline about not being able to date Jake till she turned sixteen.
Sure, her dad had said that she wouldn’t for sure be allowed to go out with him, but she wasn’t worried about that.
At the end of the day, she was her father’s princess, and he almost never said no.
She hummed her way through her morning routine, taking extra care with her hair and makeup. Today of all days, she wanted to look as grown up as possible, and her school uniform didn’t leave her with a whole lot of options.
Still smiling, she grabbed her bag and headed down the stairs to the kitchen for breakfast.
As he did every year on her birthday, her father stood at the stove making her favorite French toast. Her mother was sitting at the table already, fighting with Matt about drinking his milk.
Hearing footsteps, Robin looked up. “Happy birthday, sweetheart!” She looked down at Matt, who’s lip was stuck out in a pout, and had his arms crossed over his chest. “Don’t you want to say something to your sister?”
“Happy birthday, Lana,” he said dutifully.
Lana laughed, dumping her bag next to her chair. “Thanks, Matty.” She crossed the kitchen to join Patrick next to the stove. “No birthday wishes, Daddy?”
Patrick wrapped her in a hug, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. “Happy birthday, baby. Could you please stop getting older already?”
Lana shook her head. “I don’t really think that’s possible, no.”
“Fine.” He let her go and handed her a plate. “Go eat.”
“Thanks, Dad!”
She settled herself behind the table, Patrick at her heels doing the same.
“So, Lan, what are your plans for the day?” Robin asked, sipping her coffee.
“Well…” Lana said, eyeing her father warily. “Dinner with you guys, of course, and then I was hoping you’d let me go to the movies with Jake.”
Patrick opened his mouth to answer, but Robin spoke first.
“It’s a school night.”
Lana frowned. “I know, but it’s my birthday.”
“It’s still a school night.” Robin locked eyes with Patrick, and they communicated silently for a moment, Patrick breaking the contact with a sharp nod and a frown. She turned back to her daughter. “Why don’t you invite Jake to come over for dinner and you guys can watch a movie here? And then, you can maybe go to one on Friday night? Since your party is Saturday.”
“Really?!” Lana squealed, jumping up from her chair, and throwing her arms around Robin.
“Really,” Robin laughed, hugging her daughter back.
“You guys are the best!” Lana hugged Patrick tightly. “Thank you!”
“You’re welcome,” Patrick said gruffly.
“You won’t regret it, I swear,” Lana babbled, brimming over with happiness. “Thank you, thank you, thank you!”
Outside, a car honked.
“Oh, that’s Molly.” Lana grabbed her bag and darted out of the kitchen for the front door. “Bye!”
The front door slammed shut behind her.

At school, Lana walked into the building beaming.
“You are excessively happy,” Molly said for about the twentieth time since she’d picked Molly up. “What is going on?”
Lana shook her head, coming to a halt next to her locker. “I can’t tell you yet.”
“Fine,” Molly sighed. “I’ll see you at lunch.” She narrowed her eyes at her best friend. “I expect to be told what’s going on then.”
Molly sauntered down the hall towards her locker, and Lana turned her attention back to her own. She was mentally debating how many books she needed to cram into her bag, when Jake’s face slid into view.
“Happy birthday,” he murmured, the devilish grin she loved on his face.
She beamed at him and closed her locker, slipping the last of her books into her bag.
He took it from her, and asked, “So why so smiley?”
“I have good news,” she said mysteriously, as they started walked down the hall together. “Guess.”
“You found out who you’re going to be in the Nutcracker?”
She shook her head.
“You got your driver’s test scheduled?”
“Well, yes, but not that.” She looked up at him, and said meaningfully, “Guess.”
Understanding dawned on Jake’s face. “You mean…”
She nodded, happiness written all over her face. “Finally!”
“Oh, thank god,” Jake said with relief, grabbing Lana’s hand and dragging her to a semi-deserted alcove near the auditorium. He dropped their bags to the ground, and brought his hands up to frame her face. “Not being able to do this was killing me,” he said softly, lowering his mouth to hers in a gentle kiss.
She kissed him back eagerly, wrapping her arms around his waist. Oblivious to the rest of the world, they kissed till the sound of the first warning bell startled them back to reality.
He laughed, leaning his forehead against hers. “We need to get to class.”
She pouted. “Do we have to?”
“Lana Drake!” Jake exclaimed in a faux scandalized tone. He bent down to pick up their bags.
“It’s my birthday,” she sniffed as they began walking down the hall to class, this time hand in hand.
“Still.”
“Oh, you’re invited to dinner tonight.” She made a face. “Well, more like ordered. And they said we couldn’t go out tonight because it’s a school night. But we can go out this weekend if you want.”
“I want,” he assured her.
“Good, because I’m counting on you to be my date to my party, too.” She smiled up at him, almost shyly. Having what she’d wanted for so long was making her nervous somehow. And she was never nervous around Jake.
He squeezed her hand. “Of course.”
They stopped outside Lana’s homeroom. Jake handed back her bag.
She stretched up on her toes and brushed her lips across his quickly. “See you at lunch!” she called back over her shoulder as she darted into the classroom.
She sank down into her desk chair, wearing a foolishly besotted smile.
Happy birthday to her.
