It was Thanksgiving at Wyndemere.

The assorted Corinthos-Davis-Lansing-Cassadine-Spencer “cousins” were clustered together around the table where appetizers were laid out. Morgan was entertaining them with tales of his life in the freshman dorms at St. Francis College in Brooklyn, and Kristina was sympathizing and comparing them with her experiences in the dorms at Yale. Jake and Spencer were half listening to Morgan’s stories, but were also arguing about the latest basketball game between their schools. Molly and Cameron were holding hands, and Molly’s head rested against his shoulder, while Audrey tugged at his arm trying to get her big brother’s attention.

Alexis and Nikolas were debating some aspect of Cassadine Industries related business, and Elizabeth was nearby, half listening, half focusing on the cluster of children on the opposite side of the room.

Ric seated himself next to her. “It’s strange, isn’t it?”

Elizabeth started. “What?”

He nodded his head towards their children, who were sharing a chaste kiss. “Molly and Cameron.”

“Oh,” Elizabeth said slowly. She shrugged. “I think it’s lovely, actually. They’re very sweet together.”

“Nothing like first love,” Ric agreed, taking a sip of his wine. “But that’s not quite what I meant.”

Elizabeth arched an eyebrow. “Forgive me for being obtuse, but what are you talking about, Ric?”

“Did it never occur to you that but for a few choices here or there, Cameron and Molly might have been siblings?” Ric asked lightly. “Have you ever told him that I was going to adopt him before he was born?”

“What?” Elizabeth shook her head in disbelief at the question. “No, what would have been gained by that?” Elizabeth asked. “Lucky is his father. I made enough other mistakes where that was concerned, but Lucky is his father. He doesn’t need to know about the mistakes that I made before he was born. I wish he didn’t know about some of them I made after.”

Ric tried to mask the hurt he felt at her comments, but it flashed behind his eyes. “Oh, I see. Glad to know that’s all I was - a mistake.” He started to rise, but Elizabeth laid a hand on his forearm and he stilled.

Elizabeth sighed. “Ric, you know that’s not what I meant.” She tugged on his arm. “Sit down.”

Ric sat.

“You would have been an amazing father to Cameron, I have no doubt about that,” she said gently. “But the way that I latched on to whatever man I was with, and wanted them to play father to Cameron, it’s not something I’m proud of.”

“That’s not how it was!” Ric protested, grasping at her hand. “I wanted to be Cameron’s father, you know that.”

She squeezed his hand. “I know that. But after how I behaved with Jason and Lucky, I can’t really say that it isn’t what happened.” A hint of shame crossed her face, but she quickly covered it with a wistful smile.

“Do you still miss him?” Ric asked haltingly. “I thought you were happy with Nikolas.”

“What Nikolas and I have is different,” Elizabeth said carefully. “It’s not what I had with Lucky, or with Jason, or -” she smiled, “with you.”

“You didn’t answer my question,” Ric pointed out

She shook her head with a smile. “And I won’t.” She looked over at Molly and Cameron again, and saw Molly beaming up at Cameron with a wide smile and Cameron smiling back with a look of total adoration on his face. “I used to look at you like that.”

Ric glanced over at their children, and smiled with remembrance. “I remember.”

“I think Molly and Cameron are our second chance,” Elizabeth mused. “What we might have been like without complications and the mistakes we made.”

“You think?” Ric asked.

She nodded firmly. “I do.” She stood to go check on the preparations for dinner. “And Ric? If they love each other half as well as we did, they’re going to be very lucky.” She smiled at him, and walked away.

Ric stared after her for a moment, and then shifted his glance to his daughter and her son. Molly was standing on her tip toes and whispered something in Cameron’s ear. He laughed and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pressing a kiss to the side of her head.

Maybe Elizabeth was right. Maybe it was something like redemption.

Maybe they’d eliminate the ghosts of what might have been.
