Big Rain . . .

Thunder rumbled for almost an hour before it got here. And when it did, it flat poured buckets for over an hour. We were in the middle of dinner and I could see the water creeping up on the patio. I couldn’t stand it, so I quit eating and decided I’d rather be taking pictures ( Read more... )

Wow! I would get concerned as it neared the doorways. Has it ever come in in the past?

No, it has only come within inches once, then it always seems to stop and recede. This has happened a few times over the years, that we'd get so much rain so quickly, it couldn't drain fast enough, and it has actually come up further than it did tonight. It is a little scary, but then it would have to come up the five inch high step into the house, too.

Stilts are a good thing and many homes in flood areas are built up off the ground a few feet or on stilts down here.

I guess we're just used to it every year during the rainy months. If we see a problem we try and keep ahead of it and take care of it for the next time.

Yep, every place has their goods and bads, their ups and downs. You just adapt to whatever comes your way.

Most of the ground around here is sand and very porous, but once it gets saturated, the draining and receding goes a lot slower.

That plant is called Sansevieria cylindrica, an uncommon distant cousin of the common mother-in-law tongue plant. It is a solid cylinder like a spear, slow growing, can grow up to six feet tall or more. It does not spread rampant like the mother-in-law tongue does. When I send you the amaryllis bulbs (I haven't forgotten about them), I will send you a cutting. It is totally maintenance free, creates a very neat look to any garden and it is such a clean plant. That's why I can have it on my patio. I started with one spike about 10 years ago and now have a few dozen around the gardens outside, even after giving many away.
