Reflections and shadows....I used to get these two mixed up all the time and call them the wrong thing, and once my sister even asked me if I knew the difference. After that little embarrassing moment, I made sure I did

I'd say that it was building a nest, too. I didn't know that they could gather water and mud or dust separately, though!
Very good photos! I like all the little holes in the cement in the first one. I see the slight shadow :) The second one had me gasping and the third one is just magnificent!
Yeah, I do think you know the difference between shadows and reflections :) :)
They are such fascinating creatures, but I am not a big fan of them. It seems every time I move something in the yard, there is a nest. I hate when the mud dabbers or whatever the ones are that build the black nests, build them almost over night on the sides of your house. They stain the paint so much we are always having to touch up when we knock one down.
That is a new bird bath we bought when we started the back yard redo. The bottom is a solid concrete totem and the basin is like 2" thick concrete, very crude with little holes and curving design in it. It weighs a ton and Pete had so use a hand cart dolly to get it in the back yard . . . in two separate trips. We now have five. I guess we are starting our own collection of bird baths.
I like hornets - not the stinging wasps. Hornets are a nuisance when they block up holes in things. Yes, they do stain walls and cupboards, and I can't seem to ever be able to wash the stain off. But so long as I cover all wind instruments and equipment that has holes in them, I love them...stains and all!
Wow, Pete really had to work to get that birdbath in there! The birds are lucky around your place :)
These are great photos. I think you're right about getting water to make a nest. I'll put up a video of a wasp that almost got eaten by one of my pitchers. I know you've been wanting to see a bug fall in. I was disappointed he escaped.
