In September, Aidan joined a playgroup for kids with special needs. I drove him the first day. His excitement was obvious. All kids are special needs kids. They all need you, whether they can show it or not. The needs are different, though. In my experience, for an autistic kid, you are the center of his universe, and you may remain so for a long time. Believe me, having him excited to be elsewhere is a good thing. It's not a disconnect, it's branching out, which is exactly what he needs. It will never replace you, though. Never fear, honey.
