Ah, this chapter...it always makes me tear up, just a bit. Poor Rose--lonely even with being loved so dearly. I love how you capture that and remind us that a person can be surrounded by loving friends and family, and still feel alone. And then Ten comes along, and knows just what to say, and how to comfort her, and *swoon*.
Of course, when you are surrounded by people who you know love you and still feel alone, then you feel guilty for feeling alone, which is where Rose kind of gets trapped. Lucky for her, the Doctor gets things exactly right sometimes.
“Pay?” Brem sounded affronted, as if watching him were such an honour he expected people to be bidding for the privilege.
HA! Brem is such a mini-me of the Doctor at times. And this is the point of this chapter. Yes, he's part human, but he's not. Don't ever confuse the two.
I adore this story! I specifically like the way you turned it around at the end of this chapter and had Rose be the one who was lonely. It's true in a marriage, especially one where the couple spend so much time together, that they want friendships outside of the relationship. Which ironic considering how long most people look for their potential wife/husband to come along.
However the character that is intriguing me most at the moment is Athena! It seems as though we've seen so little of her, but what I have seen is terrific. Keep it up, and keep posting!

I'm happy you're enjoying this so much. I guess what everyone discovers about marriage is that you're never going to need just one person in your life: you need a society around you, a network, and Rose needs that at the moment.
Athena is quite interesting, it's true. Second children who follow first-borns with as strong a personality as Brem's are always interesting to watch form themselves.
Echoing the love everyone else has given to this chapter.
Brem is, as always, a darling, although a thoroughly amusing one. "Precocious" barely begins to cover it, really! I can't help but think socialising on a regular basis might do him some good, though! ;-)
And Rose... poor Rose. Very realistic. Am glad the Doctor worked it out and glad they're staying around for a while.
Brem could use some social skills, it's true. Rose is spot-on when she says that he's at risk of turning out a bit like the Doctor: all rude and not ginger. Plus, I think Rose may also be anxious to make sure that Brem and Athena don't feel like their life is as lonely as Rose feels it is at that moment.

Brem crinkled his nose. “We’re not aliens, Mum, we’re Time Lords.”
What a fantastic line! Brem is such a sweetie.
Fervently loving this story, Brem and Theenie! (Such a gorgeous name: Athena. I love it!)

And his nature is constantly caught between two worlds, it's true, and he needs to learn how to reconcile them.
