The sun rose from behind the great city wall, illuminating first the harbor, then Porte Oliva itself. Marcus didn’t pay much attention. Cithrin’s message had unsettled him more than he was willing to admit. Why did she have to go to Camnipol? Why now, when there was war? It didn’t matter it was said to be almost over - even at the very end of a war, people got killed. Marcus knew that better than anyone. And Cithrin knew that he knew…

He put a hand over his eyes and drew a slow breath. It wasn’t Cithrin’s fault. She was young - of course she wanted to make her own way in the world. Rise up in the bank. Marcus tried to picture her at an expensive reception, golden chandeliers decorating the room, chatting to Camnipol’s nobility. He couldn’t. Cithrin didn’t belong there; she belonged in the back of the old coffee shop, talking business with Porte Oliva’s merchants. She belonged somewhere he could protect her.

She’s not your daughter, Marcus reminded himself.

What about him then? He could leave at dawn tomorrow. All he had to do was resign as captain of the bank’s guard and hand his keys over to Yardem. With some luck Kit would still be waiting for him and he could follow the old man in his folly to save the world from some evil goddess. If that was a true story.

Only then if Cithrin came back, he wouldn’t be here…

Footsteps approached him. Sure enough it was Yardem, chewing on a straw, his earrings tingling, looking at him with a mixture of curiosity and concern.

“Will you come back to the bank, sir? Heard there’s work waiting.”

Marcus didn’t meet his eyes. “Will.”

It felt like a mistake. But that was life for him, then.
