Mr Cabbage wasn’t a stupid man. He wasn’t a very clever man either, but surely no stupid man could run a farm with thirty cows and fifteen pigs. Most of all, he wasn’t a very lucky man. His wife had run off with a troupe of travelling actors a month ago and now his daughter and his best pig had fallen ill the same day. So Mr Cabbage ran into the village and didn’t stop until he had found a tall woman dressed in black and wearing a pointy hat indicating her status as a witch. Had he been a little less excited, he would have noticed this particular woman’s stern frown...
Asking her to treat the pig before his daughter and then asking her to cook dinner… Granny muttered under her breath, well aware of Mr Cabbage fidgeting as he watched her with a fake smile. Probably thought she was cursing his food. Ha! The soup was far too tasty right now. She decided it would need some more coal. That should teach him a lesson. Most farmers in Lancre had had to learn the hard way: always show proper respect to a witch. She might turn out to be Esme Weatherwax…
