I'm currently living pretty close to 8th ave in Brooklyn, which is kinda like Brooklyn's china town(not that this makes me an expert on all things Chinese). For the most part, when you're in a Chinese establishment, Chinese don't queue. There's really no concept of line. They are not trying to be rude, it's just a cultural difference. I'm pretty sure that our line forming behavior is the product of our country's British colonial past.

Indeed. The Brits will queue for anything. And do so in a polite and orderly fashioin. I have stood in lines over an hour long (to get books signed by P'Terry) and people in the lines were never impatient or annoyed. Sadly, America hasn't really interited that aspect from Britian.

For E.Mc: I would imagine that tall red-haired men are unusual outside of toursit season. Did he turn into a walking attraction?

While China is Communist and now cool with Capitalism, when the two collide in the way of "OMG BUY THIS CHAIRMAN MAO BOBBLEHEAD" souvenir stuff, it amuses me.
I want to say it is a weird form of irony, but I am not sure if that is the right term to use to describe it.

Ooo, the Forbidden City! I liked that and the Great Wall the best.

I know what you mean about feeling weird in China. I was very relieved once we got OUT. But then, we were there with a religious group and had to be very careful about everything we did and said while we were there.
