Day o6 - Most annoying anime character
I decided that Mary Sues were off limits, because they aren't real characters. Therefore I'm limiting my search to only characters with personalities and flaws. It was hard to just choose one - and I was torn between Orihime from Bleach and Shampoo from Ranma ½. However, I reasoned the most annoying out to be Kuonji Ukyo from Ranma ½. Shampoo got some positive points because she was just following her cultures' way of doing things and Orihime is just an idiot.
Ukyo on the other hand...
Her character was raised pretty typically as a Japanese citizen and she knows the in and outs of proper behavior due to actually living IN society. However, what does she do? She puts herself on the same level as Shampoo by aggressively chasing after a man who does not love her. She also puts herself on that same level by plotting different ways to get him. Flirts relentlessly and then beats him up. She acts extremely petty when it has anything to DO with Ranma.
Yes, she may own her own business and is probably the most "mature" of the fiancées. However, that makes her behavior even MORE mind boggling. Like I said, Shampoo has the excuse of being raised as an Amazon warrior (in China). Kuno Kodachi is just batshit insane like her brother, Kuno Tatewaki - who is a (lovable) moron. Tendo Akane also acts immaturely, but I like her character for other reasons and it's not like Ranma doesn't GIVE her a reason to want to punch him in the face. On that note, Akane is constantly being picked on by Ranma; Ranma does NOT pick on Ukyo. Ranma also calls Ukyo the "cute" fiancée. What has Ranma ever done to Ukyo to make her want to beat him up?
Ukyo - the "mature" one who is able to live independently without needing support from anyone - has no reason to act the way she does with her dirty, immature, clingy, underhanded methods. It makes me dislike her character even more every time I see this series. Also, she's constantly imposing herself in the Tendo household - which Shampoo has an excuse for due to ignorance but Ukyo does not. Yes, Ranma may not be clear by ever flat out telling Ukyo that he has no plans on marrying her, and so she continues to believe they are actually engaged, but still...Ranma isn't clear with ANYONE and everyone else has other reasons for their behavior. I almost grew to give her character a LAST chance at the end of the series, but when she became involved with trashing Ranma and Akane's wedding - after it was obvious they liked each other - that sealed the deal for me.
