Also, does it count private posts in its calculations? Because when it's for my eyes only, oftentimes I'll write in incomplete and telegraphic sentences.

No, it can't because it can't see those entries. However, a elementary rating isn't a bad thing. It means your journal is very easy to read by a wide range of people. For example, the average newspaper is written at about a 7th grade level. If it were more difficult to read, then they would lose readers who couldn't understand what it was saying. And if it makes you feel any better, my journal was rated at a jr. high level.

I agree, an elementary rating isn't a bad thing. At first I was proud of my blog's rating and then I realized - looking at the title of the page "The Blog Readability Test: What level of education is REQUIRED to understand your blog?"

The fact that I was proud of my rating proves the point that us Illini are pretentious and pompous :) And if not all us Illini, at least me.

I'm sad my blog is only accessible to a more limited audience. Good job at being accessible and therefore more influential.

Don't feel bad - my blog was rated elementary too. And my pet blog was rated "Genius" - go figure. I think their calculations are off, because I don't put any more effort into my pet blog than I do my regular blog.

I re-checked my blog reading level after my last post and it scored me at 'college: undergraduate'. Perhaps the presence of the reading level badge automatically docked me points; maybe something to do with vanity and pretentiousness.

Anyway, I think their rating system involves the sentence complexity of the most recent post, or perhaps an average of the first page of text. My second to last post (entitled "That Feeling") had more complex sentences than the most recent, leading me to believe that the rating is based on sentence structure. Being the inquisitive person that I am, I'll likely continue checking my blog reading level periodically. Further experiment results and analysis can be shared upon request.

Thanks for the link, Amy. I was wondering what caused the spike on Google Analytics :-).

Brainy and clever? Really? AWESOME!

Haha. You're great, Laura. I miss you. Did I already mention I'm gonna be in Gainesville the 15th-17th (what are you doing that Sunday??)
I actually have a shuttle taking me to Orlando the 18th where I have to sit and wait at the airport for 4-5 hours for my flight. . . but I'm guessing you'll be teaching a bunch of dramatic (in more ways than one) during that time. . .

And for your info, I'm not sure you're right about the most recent post being what it's about. Because I checked blogger after posting my comments about the reading-level thing and blogger still ranked at Genius level and the thoughts on reading-level come nowhere close to my discussion of pedunculated polyps and Imogen Heap. :-p

That's supposed to say "dramatic teens".

I think you're probably right. I'm really beginning to think it's the average of the first page of text. I'm guessing it would be easier to write code for a program reading an entire page rather than a brief segment of one.
