Three New Species

Yesterday was a gorgeous day, bright and breezy and cool, and a friend came up to walk the land with me.

We saw a lot of interesting stuff, including finding three "new" species for my land list.  I got good photos of only two of them, both moths (the butterfly's picture didn't come out well at all, but there are other good shots of it elsewhere ( Read more... )

I love snout season.

Some years they are as common as blowing leaves, only purposeful.

I suspect you're thinking of the American Snout butterfly, a very different creature. They peak in drought years when the drought is about to break, like last fall, and are quite visible in daylight...much bigger than this tiny moth.

American Snouts also have ridiculously long (longer than this) snouts.

Last year I took a series of pictures of their color variations: some almost silver on the underwing, some much darker and with markings of charcoal brown.
