Bats - Specifically, it's the shots of the slums/island and also where the fat cop is getting his food, right before he becomes Batman's yo-yo. However, there is a rumor or three making the rounds of the Internets that Nolan had the entire cast and crew over to his house just prior to the beginning of the shoot for a screening of Blade Runner. He then informed everyone that that was the look and feel he was going for. I think it worked well.
Funny how you mention "vertigo" and Neil Gaiman in the same post, when we allll know Gaiman rose to fame writing for DC/Vertigo. Coincidence? (whispered) "I think not
