I too really loved Earthbound - greatly in part because it had a world I could really relate to. Yes it was far out and crazy but at least it took place in a world somewhat similar to what I experienced.

I wonder if the SNES tugged at some of our heart strings more strongly because we were more naive and able to be so emotionally touched by adventure. Or maybe its partly that many games nowadays go for their impact via flashiness as opposed to depth?

The Super Nintendo probably has the most games that really moved me emotionally growing up. To this day I don't really get that feeling as much anymore.

Ditto, my friend. I still can't watch the final battle against the mother brain in Super Metroid without getting all emotional.
