You know what?

February (overtime work at TRS excepted*) is going to be pretty awesome. The following things are happening:
  • Luther Wright and the Wrongs play at the Gold Rush (technically this is late-January, but close enough)
  • This film festival that wendykh reminded me of in some comments today
  • The concert we're going to (ostensibly part of the film festival) with John ( Read more... )

What do you think of:

I'm inclined to agree.

I agree, too. I hate hockey "codes", like this and fighting. It's all bullshit.

This is the downside to not having the egotism among hockey players that you see among, say, football players though. It cuts both ways. I agree that right now Subban is joyful and as the writer notes, eager to please, but down that road you'll find primadonnas like Chad Ochocinco. There was a time, after all, when football celebrations were still generally just joyful and not the look-at-me spectacles we get today.

I'm not saying Subban is in the wrong (or Linus Omark - Google "Linus Omark shootout controversy" if you're unfamiliar), just that if you want to be able to hold any kind of high ground about hockey players being better people (generally) than athletes in other sports (and lots of hockey fans will make this case), then you need to recognize that letting them show more of their personalities while they are on the ice is a bit of a threat to that.

God I'd never hold that argument. Their domestic violence rates alone pretty much void that. NHL has a SERIOUS DV issue and yes it is more prevelant than in other leagues. No I am not saying all NHLers are wife beaters. I'm saying it's treated way too chill in the NHL.

Ok - well how about this then? A lot of people will make the case that part of hockey's appeal is the "aw, shucks" mentality of a lot of players*, versus the NFL and NBA where it is all about me. I think you'd acknowledge that exists, at least, and that players like Ovechkin and Subban could endanger it. (I personally am not making this argument, just playing Devil's advocate.)

*Helps, of course, that most hockey players come from more collectivist-minded places like Minnesota, Saskatoon and Helsinki.

I could've done that, but not this weekend. It's been hovering around freezing. :/
