How many of you (those of you who are roughly my age) have held a job for five years? I could be wrong, but I suspect there aren't many 27 year olds in this day and age who have. At least, not a full-time job. There are exceptions, but it's fairly rare ( Read more... )

important line from the article: The average twentysomething entering the job market for the first time this year can expect, on average, 9 to 13 job changes in a working lifetime. (Put differently: the average job in America now lasts only 3.6 years.) Those are projected median figures, which means that 50% of you can expect more job changes than that.

i've been in my department 3 years and 8 months now. although, as you know, i changed job titles in the department about 3 months ago.

Yeah, I've heard similar statistics for Canada. When most people our age hear that I've been in the same job for five years (actually five plus years), they're very, very surprised.

I stayed at my first post-college job for five and a half years, until they laid me off. I feel the same way about it as you: extremely relieved to be out of there. And everything in my life has changed within about the last two years except my city, too! Job, apartment, love life . . . I even have a cat now, and didn't two years ago. It's actually been a little over two years since my job changed, and almost exactly two years since my apartment changed, but it is all a relief.

I've got a couple years on you but my current job is 6 years and counting while my previous was 8 years. I'm old school. :p

3 years was my longest-running job, but it was sometimes part-time, sometimes full-time, so... i suppose my longest, unbroken full-time job was 2 years.
