Detective work.

One of the things I occasionally have the opportunity to do in my job is a kind of historical detective work. It's probably the thing that I have the most fun doing. For instance, just now I was given a name and a graduation year (1927) and told to find everything I can on a particular guy. I will! Last time I did much of this, we discovered a former Olympian, and his family ended up giving to the archives all kinds of amazing stuff, including the uniform and shoes the guy wore at the 1924 Olympics(!!!). I doubt anything quite that cool will happen this time, but you never know. :)

That's the one thing I really loved too when I worked there. Even though it wasn't at all part of my job, I would always take the assignments. There is an insanely large amount of information in old newspapers alone that you can't find online.

It's true. And it's also true that we get a lot of researchers who whine and moan whenever they realize that!
