Ever wonder what type of slave you would've been?

Wait, that question is not as crazy as it seems. I promise.

First of all, this is obviously not directly to my non-black flisters. But I remember as a child wondering if I would've tried to escape. If I would've been working with Sojourner or doing work like hers. Or if I just would've been like " ( Read more... )

I've thought about this from time to time. Honestly? I'd be the kind that was beaten to death, or disfigured to the point that I couldn't run. I'm just too ornery and my intelligence/sense of self preservation can fly out the window when I feel opressed. The only way I'd have done as told would be if I'd had babies I was terrified of having sold away from me, otherwise I'd prolly have tried to escape and been mutilated or killed.

definitely. i think we might have spoken on this before? i don't just wonder if i would have tried to escape...i wonder what type of work i would have doing, what social networks were like & how i would've related to the other slaves & them to me...if in my vocabulary there would have been remnants of any language from any of my african ancestors, if i would have been muslim, adopted christianity, something altogether different, what my real perception of my white masters would have been, and what i would have thought freedom would be.

i also wonder, during interstate car rides, how the land looked before it was colonized by los euros, if a particular area was used to be a meeting place, a neighborhood, or land for grazing by any native americans...or if any slaves ran through the woods i'm passing through, trying to escape to freedom.

I always wonder that on car rides through southern states. I remember driving through South Carolina (beautiful state to look at) once and looking at the trees and wondering which ones were used for lynchings.

i think about in terms of what kind of person are you now... the majority of people are indoctrinated by our parents to be conformist and tow the line... so i'd like to think i'd be buck and run away at first chance but, the reality is slaves make slaves... we police ourselve and we hold one another in bondage to this day... slave masters trained us well, there are black folks to this day who whisper in there own homes when they speak on anything even remotely different in opinion... so i doubt a whole helluva lot would have the guts to stand up and do anything... so i probably would have did what slaves did back then... till shit got to a point that i couldn't take it...i'm a person who reacts when pushed ... i probably woulda refused an ass whooping and been killed...

I've wondered what kind of white guy I'd be back then. That question scares the shit out of me. Of course I like to think I know, but in that climate during that period of this country it's hard to say. My Mormon ancestors were staunchly anti-abolitionist, and my dad's side were French-Canadian laborers.

Edit: I know you weren't looking for a response from me on this, but it got me thinkin'.

I think sinbad put it best.....

I would've been a House Negro

*MASTA JOHNSON, THEY TRYIN' TO RUN!! MASTA SEE YOU HIDIN' BEHIND THAT TREE!!!*

but nah...never really thought about it. I think it depends on your influences at the time as much as anything.
