I saw an Oprah After the Show a while ago where she was dumbfounded that the white folks in her audience didn't know about hot combs. I'd never thought about any other ethnicity's knowledge of them, but at that moment I thought "Oh I can see why they don't know." Of course I also see why Oprah was dumbfounded because they are so ingrained in our ( Read more... )

This is kind of like that. In highschool a friend of mines who was mexican was spending the night at my house, and she FELL OUT laughing when she saw me "wrapping" my hair. She had never seen anyone do that, and did not understand what I was going to achieve by combing my hair around my head and putting a scarf on it to sleep. She said, she thought I was trying to wear my hair in a "beehive" hair do, lilke on cry baby.

lol@beehive. Dang if a doobie/wrap seems strange to her, I'm glad she missed the Salt n Pepa asymmetrical fad.

if you think about it no one else gets ashy. Matter of fact I was shocked that the German knew what it meant. But she is also surprisingly well versed in hip hop culture.

um...I have no idea what saddity means....Matter of fact I'm still saying Sad-did-ee.

My roommates in wilmington had no idea what a do-rag is for. That was a shock to me.

"um...I have no idea what saddity means...."

You're killin me right now. Never heard of saddity or high saddity, like bougie? Anyway that's what it means: bougie, stuck up, etc.

"if you think about it no one else gets ashy."

Yeah, after the word didn't show up in the online dictionary's database I realized it was a black term and figured it was 'cause we are the main ones who get ashy. It's just so natural though. The notion of ashiness.

the word "niggardly" has no relation to the word nigger but my professor was wise in advising that it's word that shouldnt be used. He said "So what? We lose one 'good' word how many better words do we have?"

I agree. I remember the big deal made over a white exce using it in a board meeting. And while I was annoyed that people were mistaking it for "nigger" I still think he prolly used it on purpose and that we have enough synonyms to replace it such that it isn't necessary anymore.
