Would... those kinds of things be effective? I think guns are available around here at least, but all I've seen are soldiers carrying them, mostly...

Yes.They aren't very reliable, but getting ahold of a real weapon is difficult here.

I think most people here would have a weapon of some sort. Though, some more more unconventional than others.
