Bowing to public pressure, I've been concentrating on Caldecott and Printz possibles this week.  And I have come to the unfortunate conclusion that

as both literature and art.

Also,

DO NOT WRITE IN RHYME UNLESS YOU ARE DR. SEUSS.

If you haven't seen it before, I highly, highly recommend Shaun Tan's "The Arrival". "Picture book" seems like a weird label for a book with such complex themes.

I will confess that I mostly wanted you to do Caldecott this week so that I could just see what you thought instead of doing it myself.

Too many to list, really. I'm getting them from Betsy Bird's list of mock Caldecott contenders and Goodreads.

I haven't kept detailed notes, but a couple of ones I hated were If Animals Kissed Goodnight and Will Sheila Share. Most I thought were sort of lackluster. So many of them were teaching a lesson. I was really disappointed in A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever, which sounded great, but I thought it was boring.

Look for books illustrated by Lisbeth Zwerger. She's the best.

I concur- Shaun Tan's The Arrival is not to be missed. Also, The Letter Home by Timothy Decker.
