Cold! Cold!  Cold!  This is the first day it's been cold enough that it actually feels like something of a challenge, not turning the heater on until December.  We've had an unseasonably warm November (we actually got STRAWBERRIES in the CSA box this week, which was a surprise to everyone, including the farmer); last year, one of the reasons we ( Read more... )

You make me feel competitive. But it's COLD! I don't think I'll be able to put it off any longer than December 1. I suppose I'd have to know your actual indoor temperature if I really wanted to be competitive, since our apartment is pretty inefficient when it comes to heating and cooling and tends to get colder than other people expect a Sacramento apartment to be. In the winter, that is.

Let's see...I got 20 lbs of apples for 50 cents per pound at the pumpkin patch...made probably 10 or 11 quarts of sauce (the 12-quart stock pot was nearly full) and then put it into freezer containers of various sizes. Oh, and I didn't quite use all the apples for sauce; I got tired of peeling. Anyway...that's like a dollar per quart. And I can get applesauce for a dollar and something per quart at Winco. So yes, not very economically satisfying. Maybe we'd do better in larger batches? But like I said, I got tired of peeling.

I used two kinds of apples as well -- Gala and Golden Delicious. All of the websites I looked at recommended using more than one kind of apple for the best flavor.
