Newbery, and unrelatedly, peanut sauce

Oct 27, 2008 08:07

I just wrote a kind of mean post about why I think people like The Willoughbys, and what I will say if it wins any Newbery honors (I can't believe it's showing up on Newbery shortlsts), but it was rude, so I erased it.  (But I didn't dislike it because I have no sense of humor or don't "get" it, thank you very much.)

I love peanut sauce.  I made it ( Read more... )

Based on your unrecommendation, I just put The Willoughbys on my reserve list at the library. I think I'm in the mood to get het up over something, might as well be the Newberys.

Well, feel free to like it, if you want to; my Maud-list friends and acquaintances are pretty much evenly divided between dislike and love. Don't go by me!

Now I'm just very curious about it. Is the title supposed to be a play on the The Wolves of Willoughby Chase (which does have orphans and is also a parody of sorts)?

One of the things I miss the most about being off-list is not hearing chatter about new books.

I can't remember if The Wolves of Willoughby Chase is specifically mentioned, but probably.

But... but... I would like to read that mean post!

*sad*

Also: what Newbery shortlists have you been looking at? I've spent this semester all up in the Siberts.

mmm... anything I find when I google "Newbery shortlist"? I can get more specific links if necessary. But I don't think the more serious shortlisters are considering The Willoughbys. Have you read it? It strikes me as the kind of book that could make you mad because you could have done it better yourself--sacrilegious as it feels to say that about Lois Lowry.

A careful hand with the vinegar is key. I add, taste, add, taste.

Ooh, thanks for the peanut sauce recipe. If it was beverage I would drink the stuff. I made it once years ago and it rocked and have been trying to make a good one ever since, so your post really resonated with me! I will keep trying though, since I don't have a specific recipe I'm chasing. I'll let you know if I find the El Dorado of peanut sauce recipes...

I want to read the Willoughby post, too. :(

Now I liked "The Willoughbys" a fair amount. But in the same way I used to like Mad magazine. I don't see it as a serious Newbery contender.

Although there are a handful of authors who've won the Newbery twice, none have won it *three* times. I would be shocked in Lowry won it again, especially for "The Willoughbys". But I am also impressed by how versatile she is - all her books seem so different from each other. And "The Willoughbys" is definitely quite different from her other work.
