Our family tradition is to put these in the oven while we eat most of the meal, and have them sort of as a close to the meal. (Or with seconds!) Of course, our family tradition is also to have the fire department arrive at some point in association with the Yorkshire pudding, which I do not recommend.

Good tradition, and that's kind of how it worked out for us. Our own family tradition is Pillsbury crescent rolls, so the puddings were viewed with a certain amount of suspicion.
As for the fire department, there were no actual flames and we got the smoke detector silenced pretty quickly, so we lucked out there. My brother used to be captain of the local volunteers and still knows most of those guys, so I would never have heard the end of it.
