Scenes from a Week...

Easter weekend had terrific weather, but I was down in Jersey so didn't get a chance to ride at all. I did get to play a little wiffle ball with a niece and a couple of nephews. It's the first time I've swung any kind of bat in almost a decade, yet I'm the only one of the crew who actually hit the ball. Apparently none of them have their uncle's ( Read more... )

If you don't want to go with epoxy paint, try the Diamond Varathane water-based floor finish. It's pricey but it builds fast, dries very quickly (as in, 6 coats in one 8-hour day), is self-leveling, and is impervious to a broad range of solvents. It also sticks to almost anything.

Sorry to hear about the cold - they're nasty.

Yeah, I was thinking about some sort of floor paint. The main problem is that the off the shelf color options on the ones I've looked at are pretty limited.

The test run I did with the appliance epoxy isn't encouraging. I sprayed some on both plain and shellac-primed plywood, and several days of curing later I can still easily score both with my thumb nail. Pity. The shellaced side looks great except for all the gouges.

The varathane can be colored pretty readily with water-soluble pigments or metal-acid dyes. If you're going to use epoxy, use West System or System Three; both are pricey but will hold up and harden well.

Shellac is great - easy to apply, easy to repair, but susceptible to alcohol and acetone.
