You can have one. Even my mother had one, in a three bedroom cape with five kids and a sixth on the way. Okay, she called it her "sewing" room, but it was still a nerd hole. (YNMV) My father finished off a corner of the basement for her, and she had her sewing and knitting machines down there, along with a TV.

Technically, my whole house could probably be classified as a nerd hole.

They're very pretty. And as long as you're stacking stuff on them, they should work very well. I dislike open-ended shelves for books, though, or dvds. And yes, that's mostly what ends on shelves in this house, so we wind up boxing in the sides, or adding an upright end on each shelf. But for stacking? Those are very nice indeed.

Not meant for books. Although my dad built a similar set (albeit lower the the ground) that we used as book shelves in our original house. I remember that our set of Comptons Encyclopedia was on them. There must've been book ends.
