Just when you think the Red Sox organization couldn't come up with something more ridiculous to worry about, there comes this press release from the Lowell Spinners, their Single-A team. They want all the little leagues in New England to stop assigning "Yankees" as a team name, saying it traumatizes the poor kids.

Ha! Branding gone berserk!

The funniest part is, what if you're in Methuen, and you're on a little league team? What are you gonna be, the Methuen Lowell Spinners?? And Methuen Spinners makes no sense, because Methuen is not an historical landmark of fabric manufacture.

Sea Dogs would make much more sense for the coastal cities, and, um, just plain dogs for the interior tows?

Except the psycology of small boys doesn't work that way. In my day, although it would've been traumatic to get stuck on a team like the the Senators, one that always came in last in real life, God forbid if they had tried to put us on some no-name minor league team. That would've been humiliating.
