While watching Dalek a few days ago, I was struck by a parallel between that episode and The Big Bang. So I have a discussion question for the comm!
What is the difference between the Doctor deciding to kill what he thinks is the LAST DALEK,
Have pity. Why should I? You never did. (

and River Song making a Dalek beg for mercy?

In one case the scene (and really the whole episode) is framed that the Doctor is WRONG and not only wrong but out of control and scary since (we believe) he's better than that. He doesn't kill unless he has no choice. But in the second case the scene is framed as River is cool; she's a BAMF; we should admire her making a Dalek beg. After all, how many people have ever done that?
Is it a difference in show runners? Or the difference between the Doctor (our hero) and other characters? Or some other reason?
Please note that I'm not talking about simply killing a Dalek since we've seen that many times. I'm talking about having the Dalek beg to be saved and killing (or trying to kill) it anyway. Also note that this isn't in any way a 'I hate River' post since I don't. I'm quite enjoying her interactions with Eleven and look forward to seeing more of her next season. It's just an interesting parallel.
