Aliens of London/World War III

Can I just squeak in with this review?

I’m not overly fond of these episodes and I’ve been trying to figure out why. Partly because I don’t find the Slitheen all that interesting but I think a large part of it is that my suspension of disbelief is broken.

In ‘Rose’, we see the world from Rose’s POV and it looks like it’s our world and the Doctor is ( Read more... )

AoL/WWIII are totally two of those episodes that I think I don't like much, but then I started watching them and yeah, suddenly it's like "OMG HARRIET OMG JACKIE OMG NINE OMG ROSE :D :D."

I *really* love the way RTD starts fleshing out his characters in this. And the scene where Rose gets the TARDIS key is lovely. :D

We must be opposites, because my favourite thing about these episodes is the intrusion of sci-fi into reality. I was so disappointed at the end when the world decided it was a terrorist plot rather than real aliens, and I was fist-pumping at the end of The Christmas Invasion when all humans finally had absolute proof of alien life. One of my favourite aspects of RTD's Who in general is the way science fiction elements are grounded in reality, creating a weird mix of sci-fi and relatable character drama that's just perfect for me ( ... )

My favourite theory for Tosh's appearance is that she was covering for Owen, who was asked to come in to examine an alien, but was hungover at the time.

Theory? Isn't that, um, explicitly stated?

The Doctor's schtick seems to be making it up as he goes along,

I was gonna say pretty much this, but I'd add - the people he has seen rely on long-term planning? Tend to fall on their bums. Usually because of him. So he has some extra incentive there to stick with the Indy Ploy.

If it was explicitly stated, must've been in a Torchwood episode I haven't seen. I thought it was just something RTD joked about somewhere.

And yeah, long term planning is generally for villains in the Whoniverse.

It was Exit Wounds - Tosh and Owen reminisce about Tosh's first day and how she covered for him with the space-pig. Though he could have joked about it before actually putting it in a script, I suppose.
