This is one of those episodes where I feel like the premise and the villains are almost unbearably cheesy, but the characters are so brilliant that it's still a good episode. I'm sure he never forgets anyone he's traveled with...but I admit I don't understand why he pretends they didn't exist. Did previous Doctors do that? Is it a post-Time War thing? Does it hurt too much to remember them?
From what I've seen, some former companions did come up in the classic series, but it was really a rare thing. And some companions would leave, never to be spoken of again. I think it was more an external thing - since the cast changed so often, they didn't want to spend much time looking back for fear of losing their audience going forward. Susan (his granddaughter) seemed to get the most play - she got a mention here and there even through Six. (Maybe even later - I've not seen everything ( ... )
