Ooh, I haven't talked DW in awhile, but this looks like a fun discussion!

1. There are varying philosophies and opinions as to which episodes are the best to introduce a new viewer to Doctor Who. As the first episode of the new series, "Rose" is a popular choice. Do you think it's a good first episode for a new viewer? What was YOUR first episode of Doctor Who?
I think Rose works great as a first episode for a new viewer, because it is intended to introduce these characters to an entirely new fanbase who probably won't know WTF they are, while at the same time giving some sly little winks and nods to those who may have already had some passing knowledge of the show from way back. I particularly like that we're introduced to Rose first, drawn into her world, so you really understand that the appearance of the Doctor is a Freaky, Weird Thing - later on when we were introduced to other companions, it was very much from the Doctor's POV, so we were like "YOU LUCKY THING, GO WITH HIM ( ... )

Yes, this was one of my thoughts after watching this episode again- it's nice to have the companion's point of view so that we get introduced to the Doctor at the same time Rose does.

Well, I've been doing my own rewatch for another project, but I can definitely share my thoughts here too Go here to see. I think I actually covered a lot of these question on my own, this time at least.

I love this episode, mainly because it's the beginning and they still have all their adventures in front of them and they are both clearly so pleased to have met each other and there's been no depressing discussions of mortality or species difference or difficult choices.

The first time I watched it though, I was so confused -- it was on Netflix and the "cover art" had Eleven and Amy, so I was sitting there watching and thinking, where are the redhead and the guy in the bow-tie??? And then somewhere around the "I can feel the turn of the Earth" speech, I decided that I didn't care.

I've got a question, though: There's that interview with CE where he says it's a love story, sort of a love-at-first-sight kind of thing. So is it really love at first sight? Or love at first...episode? By the time he catches her swinging on the chain (and holds on to her for a liiiiiittle longer than necessary), does he already fancy her?

There's a lot of debate over where the Doctor and Rose fell for each other.

Personally, I don't think the Doctor figured out how he felt until The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances when he got jealous over Rose hanging out with Jack. And I don't think Rose realized her feelings for the Doctor until The Parting of the Ways.

ETA: But I do think that by the end of this episode, the Doctor is pretty taken with her, even if it's not quite in a romantic way yet.

It might not be the greatest plotline ever, but it does its job as a (re)introduction episode. RTD made the right choice in showing everything from the POV of the companion-to-be, because it lets new viewers find out about the Doctor, the TARDIS, etc. along with Rose. Yet the exposition doesn't weigh it down ( ... )

Best first meeting ever! <333 I adore that gif and have rewatched this scene so many times. While I found it to be pretty cheesy the first time around, it has actually become one of my favorite episodes of DW in retrospect, and the one Ihave rewatched the most after Doomsday I think. I just love seeing their memorable and perfect first meeting ("Run!" And "I'm the Doctor by the way...nicetomeet you Rose! Now run for your life!") and the beginning of their epic relationahip...

I also think it is the best introduction to the series for new viewers, in terms of the mythology and the characters. I particularly love the introduction of Rose, where in the first 2 minutes alone we get more of a sense of her life and situation and character than we do in all of s5 for Amy (terms of people saying that one is a better intro to the series.)

This is a big reason why the Moffat Era never managed to connect with me. We never really got to know much about Amy at all outside of the Doctor who makes her kind of defined by him. RTD did a better job of created more fully formed characters who were people on their own first and then encountered the Doctor later. Like for his companions, it's about how these people met the Doctor and how it changed them. But with Moffat, it feels more like it's about these people who were completely formed by the Doctor.
