Classic Who Suggestion Post

Right, so! I'm working on cementing the Master Schedule for the re-watch, and I wanted to get started on figuring out exactly which Classic Who serials we will be doing. We are going to be watching one (1) Classic Who serial between each New Who series, so we are going to need to decide on five (5) different Classic Who serials to watch ( Read more... )

The Unearthly Child One, Susan, Ian, Barbara

Pros: Kinda fun to see how it all started. And you get to see Grandpa Doctor.

Cons: Not on Netflix instant.

I really want to see this one! Stupid Netflix sent me the second serial ("Dalek") which was super boring instead...and then I canceled the DVD service. :/

But yeah, I do want to see where it all began, even if Susan is super annoying...

sadly, I thought that story would NEVER END.

I liked the Aztecs a whole lot though. Barbara wants to rewrite history!

Oooh yes! I really like Romana I but didn't suggest due to the whole Key to Time thing. I wasn't sure if they all needed to be watched or could be stand-alones. (It's been too long.)

They really can be stand alones. Like all you need to know is that the Doctor is on a mission (given to him by the Time Lords and Romana is kind of his appointed baby sitter) to collect various pieces to the Key to Time. Other than that, they're really self-contained.

The Twin Dilemma Six, Peri

Pros: Because Six should probably be experienced at least once in your life. Companion strangling! The Doctor wears a cat pin and has questionable fashion!

Cons: Not on Netflix Instant.

The Sea Devils Three, Jo

Pros: So much Doctor/Master. XD Seriously, there would have been a billion vids made of this episode back in the day.

Cons: Not on Netflix Instant.

The Sea Devils is fantastic! Also fantastically slashy! My favorite bit is when the Doctor punctuates a swordfight with the Master by eating the Master's sandwich. (This is not a euphemism.) Also, the part where Jo mimes through a window.

My suggestion is to go with Classic episodes that tie into the New Who seasons. For example:

S1 has UNIT, so end it with a Classic Who UNIT story. Ideas: The Invasion -- Two, Jamie, Zoe, and the Brigadier (first time he's the Brig and not a Colonel!); Inferno -- Three, Liz, the Brigadier; The Three Doctors -- Three, Two, One, Jo, the Brig

S2 has School Reunion, so end it with a Sarah Jane story. Ideas: Time Warrior -- Three and Sarah (her introductory episode); Pyramids of Mars -- Four and Sarah; Hand of Fear -- Four and Sarah (where the Doctor leaves her in Aberdeen)

S3 has the Master, so end it with a Master story. Ideas: Claws of Axos -- Three, Jo, and Delgado!Master (this episode is referenced in Last of the Time Lords!); Castrovalva -- Five, Tegan, Nyssa, Adric, and Ainley!Master

S4 has Davros, so the obvious choice here is Genesis of the Daleks -- Four, Sarah, Harry, and Davros!

S5 has Silurians, so Doctor Who and the Silurians -- Three, Liz, the Brig ( ... )

*facepalm* I was about to go "But there is TOTALLY a classic story that ties into s6, and--oh, wait. We can't very well do a watchalong of Neverland/Zagreus, can we." Maybe Curse of Fenric? It's diabolically complicated, timey wimey, full of chess metaphors, and thematically relevant to The God Complex. (IT'S ALSO ONE OF MY FAVORITES EVER.)

I second the Logopolis nomination, but as a bonus serial to watch before the s4 specials. The grandiose silliness of End of Time makes more sense, IMO, if you consider that RTD was probably subconsciously drawing on Four's last serial to figure out how to give a proper sendoff to an immensely popular Doctor.
