We do not depend on the chiv to do it. I think that the people we ignore the most are those that have great experience and no white belt. Some of them have left us. But we had several of them on the sidelines at the event. They were on the sidelines for a variety of reasons, but they have more experience than nearly all of us. And we need to use that.

And white belts can lead. I have chosen not to in order to make room for others.

Yes, we do. But not THERE, and not when they're not in armor. I'm not judging anyone who didn't get armored up for the event; everyone makes their choices. But choices have consequences. We need soldiers, not kibitzers.

I cannot speak to your motivations. But the white-belts who can lead were leaders before they were white-belts. In fact, it probably had something to do with them becoming white-belts. However, just because a King has seen fit to put a white-belt on someone doesn't make them a person other people will follow.

My motivation? Share the fun. That is it. It is fun to lead. At least it was for me. I led the Midlands army as CO or XO four times. Then I stepped aside to make room for others to do it. I led the belted champions once and was not given a second chance. Would I like to lead again? Yes. Am I going to get in the way of someone else getting a chance? Not likely. Certainly not just because I think that we might not do well with a person in command. I will advice and I will step up when the situation calls for it. But never on someone.

Incidentally, if people will follow someone IS one of the criteria that is supposed to be considered before a King puts a white belt around somone. It is one of the criteria that I use before I would recommend someone to the Crown.

Two things:

1) There's leading and there's leading. Not every white-belt has the skills to lead a unit on the field. Being a leader in the SCA (required of peerage) is not the same thing as being a leader in melee (not required of peerage). You and Chen have built a great household; not every household leader can lead that unit on the field.

2) Knowing when to stop leading and hand the reigns over to someone else is important. If the same people do the leading all the time, you never get anyone else the skills to do it. The Bronze Rings have struggled with this, certainly. On the other hand, learning to trust -when- the reigns have been handed over is also important.

This is a great post, bard. Really inspires me to fight, but I have nothing for a network down here.

Hope we get to make it to Pennsic. And I hope your kingdom gets what it needs for training, practice, and cohesion.

Where are you? What do you need to fight?

I looked at our matching interests and added you.

Seamarch in Trimaris - Palm Beach County, FL. I need somebody who's willing to show up and teach me. There's local drama in the major household here, though, and I don't feel comfortable looking to them. I'm not in the SCA for drama and politics; I'm here to learn stuff.

Should be moving to Atlantia sometime in the next couple of years, though.

I added you too.

"At this point, people on the Yellow team were pretty unhappy with things -- we were outgunned when even, and now we were three and half people down -- and we asked to have the teams re-calculated. Caveron refused, based on the presumption that we won't be able to pick new teams at Pennsic. I understand the rationale behind it, but it was tough."

Yep, but this wasn't Pennsic, it was a practice, and you're supposed to learn things at a practice. Unfortunately, about the only thing some people were learning was that it really sucks to get beat up by a bigger, more experianced opponent.

I saw the same thing happening last year when I was on the "red" team, and was todl the same thing about mixing up the sides.

Pretty much the only thing the "red" team learns is what if feels like to beat up on a msaller, less exprerianced opponent. Not something that's going to be very helpful at Pennsic.

But then, what do I know about melee. :-P

you know a hella lot.

Hopefully, at other events, we will be able to rearrange, and learn other lessons.
