It could just be me, but looking closely at the enlargement of the back, rather than engraving, it appears that this repro key was made in multiple castings, and then the parts of it were machine soldered together. Does it look that way to anyone else
( ... )
the front is close, but not exact - i have been noticing some subtle differences between the UtopiaBase key and the TREKKER key.
i can use the front as-is, and i have an idea how to scratch build a new constellation for the back, but i've not yet worked out how to meld the two into a single whole...
Yeah; the only thing I can come up with is casting a master with a blank back from the key, and then carving the constellation into the back and using that as the master form for a mould (which would have to be a two-piece mould or you'd never be able to get the key out). Still thinking on it, though.
They make for interesting varients to say the least and for the price they'll make safe carry along toys that you won't be too heart broken if you loose.
How is the quality of the metal they are made from or are they a metalized resin?
I did a little hunting for intel on the utopiabase company and the general consensus is cheap but satisfying. A few people have repeated the thought that if you can't afford to have something done custom then turn to these guys to either fulfil your need or set you up with a nice hold over while you budget to get something custom done.
