Following on from the previous Post. Piers Britton has been kind enough to share some insight into how June Hudson works as well as many of her alt. costume design sketches for The 8th Doctor, The 6th Doctor, Romana II, Sam and Fitz

Not sure I really like the Romana casting - sorry D: - but I do think the costumes are absolutely gorgeous . I find them rather evocative of Lalla Wards costumes but also incredibly distinctive with a very unique feel. Especially the third one, I adore that one.
That black Sixth Doctor outfit is truly awesome! And I say this as a fan of Six's loud costume, and as someone who already sticks cat badges onto his long black coats.
There's a scene in the brilliant novel "Millennial Rites" wherein the Doctor finds himself being morphed against his will into the Valeyard and is struggling against it. That drawing could be taken straight from those pages.
I've always loved June Hudson's costume designs. Not just the ideas she has and the remarkable costumes she comes up with, but the drawings themselves are works of art. It's very interesting to read some of these notes, as it has been to read the section on Tom Baker's website about how she re-interpreted his costume for season 18, and in pretty much every case I've found myself wishing that her original design was followed rather than what ended up on screen.
Her initial sketch for Peter Davison's costume (which used to be on her website, but the website has now sadly disappeared) was amazing, and subtly different from the final costume in that it was more relaxed and less of a "costume". A great strength of her designs is that they actually look like an outfit someone would actually wear from day to day, rather than as "dressing up".
I've always loved her design for Colin Baker for The Blue Angel because, while it does look like an unusual outfit, it doesn't look like a piece of fancy dress. Again, it looks like something

I would have loved to see both Colin Baker and Paul McGann wearing these designs on TV (well, I would have loved to see more of Paul McGann as the Doctor on TV, period). I like it when the Doctor gets to mix up his wardrobe a bit while still having a distinct style each regeneration, like how Ten got more than one suit and got to change the shirts and ties underneath.
That last Shada design for Eight looks like a doctoral robe... which is fitting on a variety of levels. :)
