BayCon?

May 20, 2009 15:05

Your ever-lovin' mod will be at BayCon in San Jose this weekend, with Romana's Androids of Tara rig (on Saturday). Not taking Femmy Ten this time, because I've only got a small suitcase and that costume has been there twice, already. Time Agent Kat Smith will be staying home for much the same reason ( Read more... )

Oh man, how did I not hear about this?

That's a really good question, considering the convention's 27 years old. :D

Be nice, sweetie. Not everyone is as plugged in to the con-o-sphere as me and thee.

And, to be fair, how much PR does BayCon put out, these days? With KublaCon and Fanime on the same weekend competing for overlapping demographics, I must admit that I've been surprised at how little BayCon has (apparently) put itself about, relying (it seems) on word of mouth and google, instead...

Just sayin'.

I didn't mean to come off as snippy...I was genuinely surprised.

Truth is, it's difficult to do. We try to hand flyers out at major movie openings, but that only goes so far. With independent bookstores going the way of the dodo, and the major chains all having policies in place about not allowing material that didn't come from corporate, what other venues are there beyond the virtual?

I'll be there sometime on Saturday to meet up with some friends I made at Gally. It's been years since I've taken advantage of my "Fiend Friend of BayCon" status. Oh, and this is the last year my daughter qualifies for a discount. Cheap fan, I am.

Sounds awesome. Wish I could go. and weirdly enough I was *this* close to doing a San Fran trip this weekend. But even if it had happened there's no way I'd have convinced my GF to go to this. SDCC, Gally and Salute to Serenity are my main cons but one of these years I may need to trade up and try D*C or finally do the Vegas Trek Con. I used to be a regular at Gen Con too but I've moved away from the RPG thing.

*nod* I admit that whilst I was already walking away from a long-time RPG habit when I started getting back into fandom, cons like Gally and Chicago hastened that saunter to a determined sprint...

If you're into SF/F beyond the moving image, BayCon is a good con (more lit, is what I mean). Lit fandom ain't my preferred scene, but it's a big social event for me, being a local and all. :)

I'm not as into SF lit as I was in HS and College but if it's cheap for a single day pass I'm always up for a good con- it more about the social aspect for me now anyway than checking out cool swag/merch and autographs like it was in the old days for me. Although I'm highly tempted to try and Make Chicago TARDIS happen for Paul McGann. Although I hear Peter, Colin, Sly and Paul are all a go for Time Quest 2 next March in the UK if Tom is added to that roster I may skip Chicago to make plans for that!

re: Time Quest 2 - oh my god, that would be more awesome than my mind could contemplate...

Unfortunately, I'm already planning/hoping to make trip to Cardiff in July '10, so unless that plans gets put aside, I couldn't even *think* of Time Quest...
