Has anyone tried reproducing any of 10's ties using digitally printed fabric? There are silks available that are already paper-backed and treated for ink jet printing. My boyfriend thought he could do a decent enough job in photoshop starting with a picture of a tie(s) and cloning the pattern to fill the sheet. Then it would just be a matter of ( Read more... )

Before sending the pattern off to Magnoli to have it properly woven, I tried out my Swirly tie pattern at a site that prints neckties, can't remember the name. It was a decent looking tie, but 100% polyester was their only option, it draped terribly, etc. I'd like to see somebody give the Dharma Trading Company printable silk a try.

I've seriously been thinking about getting custom printed fabric specifically for the Thomas Nash tie in the Idiot's Lantern since so far the tie has been impossible to find.

They do their printing on a large format printer. since a tie is thin enough, it would be cheaper to buy paper backed silk on a roll. Dharma & InkonThings sells a 10' roll of Habotai silk for $15-$18. For the price, it seems worth experimenting on. Habotai can be fairly light weight, but once lined with a bit of facing on the inside edges, it should work nicely for a necktie.

I watch craigslist regularly for large format printers to print wider widths of fabric; a costumers dream to be able to print yards of their own fabric pattern!

Fabricondemand's poly satin is nice, but you'd have the same problem as the ties on the site I used. Also, in order for the tie to hang right, it has to be printed on the bias, so diagonally. If you have a larger format home printer and can get 13" wide rolls of silk it's definitely possible.
