Turlough's "Planet of Fire" costume

May 29, 2012 19:12

Hi everyone! I need a summer companion costume for this coming August so I've settled on Turlough's "Planet of Fire" outfit. It's by far the least amount of clothes that any of the male companions wore in the show, and since I'll be wearing it here on the beach at the height of summer, it seemed apropos.

I don't have the DVD, so I've been working ( Read more... )

I have no great advice, but if you do get it together (and really live in MA) then I would love to get some pics with my PoF Peri. What beach are you wearing this to?

Also, if you have no luck on the shirt, I might have a pattern to make something close. Otherwise, I am afraid I am no help.

I live in Provincetown and I'm doing the costume for Carnival (third week in August; the parade is on Aug 16). The theme this year is "Ptown a Space Odyssey" so it's going to be a sci-fi bonanza :)

I found some shots of Turlough's shoes and his hideous yellow striped socks, so I think I have a good reference there. I'm going to hit the shops in Ptown this weekend to see if I can find a match for his speedo.

If you have a pattern that might work that would be great. I'm no good with a sewing machine but fortunately I have friends who can whip up clothes with their hands tied behind their backs.

Your Peri is amazing! It would be great fun to get some pics on the town beach or out at Herring Cove if we can meet up.

With any luck we'll have a TARDIS parked somewhere in town for the week too...

Oh Wow, that looks like an amazingly good time. Unfortunately, I am just getting back from vacation on the 12th and don't think I will be up for any more traveling that week. (Provincetown is very hard to get to!) Post some good pictures!

On the shirt, take a quick look at this:

I think the shirt costruction is super basic, square body, square sleaves, and that collar looks more like just a continuation of the banding at the V than anything like a real shirt-collar. I bet some fiddling with any basic caftan pattern would get you pretty close.

Pattern-wise, the shirt is a cross between a polo and a regular button-up, but obviously without any buttons whatsoever; the stripes are red. As for shoes and socks, he's wearing yellow socks and grey sneakers, kind of bulky like Nike or similar brands. And yes, the speedo is two-tone: dark blue and grey.

Ooh! Thanks for those reference photos. They will definitely help.

I can't quite tell if the shorts are white or a light stone grey. If they're grey I might try to match them to the sneakers.

I think the shirt is going to be the hardest part of this costume, but it's definitely doable since I have plenty of time to source the material and get it sewn.

Thanks for your help!

I took a bunch of screenshots for you from a reasonable quality copy of planet of fire, and am inclined to disagree with

whoops... accidentally posted before i was done then ^^;

anywho... for your reference: http://i.imgur.com/XKsTd.jpg

The socks are yellow with a red(?) stripe. The shoes appear to be a blue-grey boat-style shoe rather than a sneaker.

The shirt is white and the stripe looks to me to be red on grey (grey with a very thin red stripe over top).

The speedo does indeed have a striped pattern (grey on dark blue). Looking closely at his hip right after they get out of the water the stripe appears to be a repeating pattern of a double grey stripe followed by a single grey stripe. (On the hip you can just make out a gap in what from far away looks like a wider stripe).

The shorts appear to be grey toned but I couldn't get any reasonable close up shots of the fabric.

I think the best plan for making the shirt would be to look to historical patterns, not modern shirts. Take a look at this pattern, Simplicity 3519. It's true that that pattern has a yoked construction, while Mark Strickson's doesn't, but it does have the combination of the unusual deep v-neck and the standing collar.

I'm pretty sure the shoes are Tretorn. Unfortunately (and unhelpfully), that style is not in production right now, but it was in recent years. You might find closeouts of them somewhere.
