I'm starting to purchase the bits for a genderswapped Five costume for Otakon this summer. I tried to research a ladies' Edwardian cricket costume, but had trouble getting patterns, so I decided to go more generic and am aiming to style it as an Edwardian ladies' equestrian outfit instead. I've picked up the skirt pattern, but I need some help ( Read more... )

i would go with the shorter coat (tan with red trim, of course) which would also allow you to make the skirts up in the pinstripes that Five used on his trousers.

Agreeing with sparky42. The shorter coat will let you show off a striped skirt better than the longer coat will. Yes, the longer coat is more accurate, but luckily the Fifth Doctor's overall look is instantly recognizable and you can definitely play around with it and still be Five-ish.

As for the hat, I'd say just search for Panama hats on Google and see what pops up. I got mine from Amazon, and it's not screen accurate but the wider brim goes better with the "femme" look, I think.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. :) I absolutely loved your costume as well, so the tip is doubly taken! I'm just a little nervous around ordering hats online since the time I ordered a white cowboy hat for one and what I got classed more as "beige" than "white." Still, having made that mistake once, I'll be doubly careful going forward. They shan't get me again!

Thanks! :D I'm thinking of revising it for next Gally too, so it's a costume that's never quite finished. I keep playing around with it. But I find the challenge fun.

I'm also seeking out a new hat so I'm curious about what will get recced for you as well.

Have you checked the profile/user info page for the comm?
http://dw-cosplay.livejournal.com/profile (The comm's rules are posted there, amongst other items.)
There's a lot of info there, but the most important, in terms of what you are looking for, is a set of breakdowns for all the Doctors. The Fifth Doctor breakdown is here:

Great info there! HD does list a few places to purchase hats from (and give some good advice on how to take care of panama hats, also). I'll post another reply in a bit with some other places to purchase hats from. HTH!:)

OMG, thank you so much! I'd poked through the various Five tags, but I didn't go far enough back to get to this and stopped after the rules on the info page. This will teach me to be more thorough in my reading. >.< I very much appreciate the help!

You're very welcome! I like seeing femme Doctors (working on a couple myself), and am so impressed by the creativity that such inspires. :)

Let me look for that hat info I promised.

I look forward to seeing your costumes, if/when you post them! (Or have previously?) I too love seeing femme doctor costumes (I didn't even realize it was a thing until about a year ago, and they're just so varied and amazing!!)
