K-9 Costume help

Nov 14, 2011 16:04

Sooo I started on my dog's K-9 costume last month, about a week or so ago I spray painted it. Problem is, when I checked on it a few days later, it was dry but I still got some spray paint on my hands. Obviously I don't want to put this on my dog if it didn't dry properly. Does anyone know why it would do that? I used it on cardboard boxes. Anyone ( Read more... )

I believe it was indoor/outdoor. But yeah that makes sense.

The reason I used spray paint was just because it was easier, but I might just try acrylic. It is non-toxic when dry, right?

Actually you probably are using acrylic. I use a lot of spray paint and silver is hard to work with. The only way to prevent it rubbing off is a good acrylic clear coat (I prefer krylon). Clear coat will dull the look of silver paint, but in the case of K-9 I think that will make it screen accurate. A lot of the automotive paints are acrylic now, it's actually hard to get oil based spray paint.

I'd suggest a sealer on top, if you can do that. I work in an art/craft store, but know almost nothing about art type stuff. I'm the resident yarn nerd.

Hmmm one of those clear spray paints you mean?

Something like this. http://www.amazon.com/Mod-Podge-Clear-Sealer-Matte/dp/B003VY9DNM/ref=pd_sim_sbs_ac_5

There are things specifically meant to seal over paint so it doesn't come off like you mentioned above. They will explicitly state that they are for sealing. They are usually clear (unless you get one specifically otherwise) and can come in spray form, which you'd probably prefer, considering you sprayed to start with.

Hm okay, thanks! I think I might do that just so my dad and I don't have to start over again. :)

I'd recommend Reflective duct tape over tin foil. It'll probably stay on better. :)

Oh that's a good idea as well. Thanks!

I realized that I worded that strangely. I meant to say reflective duct tape instead of tin foil.

It took me a second but yeah I got what you meant. :)

Also, the Doctor looks insane in that photo. <3

I used felt for my horse's K9 costume.

That's adorable! I don't know if you mean instead of using a box or if you put it over the box. I'm making it out of a cardboard box to make it look more robot like, then again it's a lot easier to do that on a 50 something pound dog than a huge horse. :P

Pictures here. I basically just covered him in felt. I had planned to be riding him that year like the previous when he was Harry Potter (pic), but it was too cold.
