On the topic of Cybermen

I was having a discussion with my hubby the other day about Cybermen. I'm not honestly sure how the conversation came about, but we were talking about it. Anyway, he's a big Cybermen fan. I can appreciate that. I like them to. They're not a favorite monster, but they are near the top of my "fear list". He, however, likes the New series Cybermen. I' ( Read more... )

Spot on, old school cybermen are more vampire than the suit of armour pretenders we see now. Let's hope Neil Gaiman can reinvent them ;)

I hadn't heard Neil was writing another one. I thought it was just a rumor. But yes, it's just so easy to see the New ones and not realize there's a human in there. Not so easy with the Classic series ones.

Agreed. The only thing the new Cybermen have going for them (apart from the skull-shaped faceplates, which I do rather like) is that they are utterly soulless, but even then the original ones do it more disturbingly. And their silence is part of it, I think - they're like ghosts rather than big clompy corporeal things.

Have you listened to the Big Finish audio Spare Parts? It's about the origins of the classic Cybermen, and it shows that the Tenth Planet design is far more effective for horror than anything that came after.

Oh, Spare Parts is FANTASTIC! So much better than the two-parter in season two. Just like Jubilee was SO MUCH BETTER than Dalek. (But at least in that situation, Dalek was at least a good story in itself.) I was terribly *meh* after the Cybermen two-parter in series 2.
