Thanks to chainofclovers, kitnkabootle, and others who have had a bad influence on me, I spent about six solid hours tonight watching Angels in America. There is a lot going on in that miniseries but, reduced to its most juvenile and self-interested point, it has Meryl Streep playing a character with short, silver hair. You can probably see where I'm going with this ( Read more... )

I am so glad you watched it and especially glad that you liked it! It really is an astonishing work, isn't it? When I was trying to convince you to watch it, I really wanted to make sure you saw all six hours so I didn't say what I was tempted to say: at about 5.5 hours in, Meryl Streep and Emma Thompson make out or have cosmic sex or whatever, then Meryl Streep spends her first few years in New York making friends only with gay men, who buy her lipstick and New Yorker clothes ( ... )

It just makes for so much thought. And some of the speeches are so beautiful. And then you watch it again and you notice these little things, like at the end, when Hannah's leaving and Prior says, "I have always depended on the kindness of strangers," that's a line from the end of A Streetcar Named Desire and then you think, AH that's awesome. And of course the line from the end of Sunset Boulevard

It's kind of like a movie dork's wet dream.

Astonishing is right - I was already a huge Meryl and Emma fan, and this really put me over the moon on Mary Louise Parker as well.

I've watched the movie with several other people, and I agree that reactions are strong. It's definitely a love it/hate it thing, and in my case (I fall into the "love it" camp, obviously) I keep meaning to spend some time reading more about it (and Tony Kushner) as I'm quite sure that, as much as I have gotten out of the experience, there's probably a great deal I'm missing. I'll take your advice and read the scripts and/or teleplay.

I wish that I'd discovered "AIA" when I was in college and my tendency to become a bit obsessed with books/movies was not only tolerated but encouraged.

I love that movie so much. I love Devil Wears Prada, but without Angels in America, I wouldn't be the Meryl Streep fan I am today.
