yikes!

I'm assuming by now that most of us are very familiar with DWP. Certainly we all know and love the scene in which Miranda arrives at Runway for the first time. In fact, let's watch it again! Starting at 5:45:

Uncanny! lol!

When I first saw the DWP trailer when it came out, first thing came to my head was the resemblance with Miranda and Cruella! lol!

Hahaha! So that's why Meryl Streep and Glenn Close get mistaken for each other so much!

Wow, that is really close... I just had a quick lookie at imdb to see if any of the crew worked on both, and nope, not that I could see. (I looked at the director, cinematographer, art direction.) I wonder if this kind of sequence has been used elsewhere? I have a feeling it might be a kind of visual introduction trope for femme fatale baddies...

Certainly of femme fatale baddies who dare to be successful, powerful professional women. I love the last few minutes of that clip, when Anita is saying that she might quit her job if she gets married (because I guess that's the Done Thing), and Cruella is appropriately appalled.

OMG I haven't watched 101 dalmatians in so long I never tied two and two together. Thats just...woah! Especially as Miranda and Cruella seemed so similar.

It's wicked though..i'm loving the way they introduce the femme fatale baddies!! When the first shot you see of a woman is her spiked heels stepping out of an expensive car you just know she's going to be bad but in a wonderfully good way lol.

Couldn't agree more flit! Your description of the first shot is 100% on target.

I loved this movie - so glad to see a bit of it again. AND to see that DWP paid homage to it! :D

That's hilarious - and I don't believe the homage was unintentional. I remember the Cruella comparisons when "DWP" was released - something about the hair, I'm sure. Just did a brief search for some of those articles and came up empty - I'm at work, and allow myself only five-minute mental health breaks, after all. I did find this forgotten gem, though - Meryl Streep explaining where she found inspiration for Miranda's appearance:

I've always admired this model named Carmen. She's got a big swoop white hair and it appears to be real, natural hair -- that kind of defiance in the face, when you're just so over the top of everything, that you can just not dye your hair.

Yes! Carmen Dell'Orefice! I *knew* it. She's featured in the current "Model as Muse" exhibition in the Met, too :)

Thanks for the link. Great article.

Thanks for those pictures - as soon as I saw them, I remembered having seen her before, though I don't think I knew her name. I can certainly see her influence on Miranda's look!

Sounds like a fantastic exhibit - are you back from NY already? I'm trying like mad to find a weekend to visit some friends there in the fall.

Yes, I'm back. It was a wild few days. And "Model" is an excellent exhibit. Strangely enough, roughly 95% of the magazines in it are issues of Vogue. When you look at the exhibit, you get the distinct impression that no other fashion magazine exists in this world. Gee. Funny how that worked out.

AH! :D As a childhood fan of Cruella DeVil, having seen 101 countless times, I noticed this similarity when I first saw DWP. It made me snicker at the time. Thanks for the reminder! :)
