Miranda Priestly was full of surprises. Andy was amazed every day when she learned something new about Miranda.

Three months from the start of their relationship Andy was shocked and amazed to learn that not only could Miranda cook, but she liked to cook!

"So..." Andy grinned, watching Miranda slice vegetables with amusement, "you have people running around like crazy people getting you the perfect meal and you actually enjoy cooking?"

"Well," Miranda bit her lip on a grin, putting the carrots into the water. "I do love cooking. But I don't like to cook for only myself, that gives me no enjoyment. My husbands kept very different hours and I didn't want to feel obligated to cook because I was the woman because I have been fighting very hard to transcend roles in my life. And I don't really cook for the girls because they are so contrary and they can't ever decide on one thing to eat. And Lucas and Stephen spoiled them by always making two different meals! I would have told them to just suck it up! I mean, of course I want to encourage individuality but it's just common courtesy. I had four siblings growing up and my mother made one meal and you ate it or you went without."

"You have four siblings?" Andy smiled, "where do you fall in the birth order?"

"Right in the middle," Miranda checked on the chicken in the oven, "I left home at 14."

"No kidding, why?"

"I wanted more." Miranda shrugged.

"I have one older brother and he picked on me so badly when I was little." Andy said, "he and I are really close now, he calls me once a month and we spend hours on the phone. Do you have a good relationship with your siblings now."

"...I left home at 14."

"You don't talk to them anymore?"

"I moved to France and changed my name."

Andy grinned, "Miranda's not your given name?"

Miranda shook her head.

"What's your name?"

"Miranda."

"No, the one on your birth certificate."

"I got it legally changed to Miranda Charlotte Priestly and that is all. That's my name."

"Oh come on, tell me your name."

"No." Miranda said firmly, but with a smile.

"Fine. Tell me about what you did when you left home at 14 then." Andy smiled.

"You want the whole story from then until now?" Miranda raised a questioning eyebrow.

"Yup." Andy smiled playfully, "you can leave out the last year and a half, I was there for that."

Miranda shook her head, "no, that's boring. You don't want to hear about that."

"Yeah, I do." Andy insisted.

Miranda shook her head firmly, "I don't really want to tell that story. Those stories. You do realize I'm fairly old, don't you? And you want my life's story. You're settling in for a long winter on that one."

"You love me, don't you?"

Miranda gave Andy a sidelong look, "you're pulling that card out already?"

"Okay, okay, I won't ask you to tell me the whole story. What if you just tell me about up to 14. Will you tell me that?"

Miranda thought about it and sighed, "alright. I was born in a little town in Cornwall, near Penzance, if you know where that is, no you probably wouldn't... My mother was really young, she had my oldest sister when she was 17 and my brother when she was 19 and she had me when she was 20 and two more brothers in the next two consecutive years. My father travelled and sent money back to us... I don't remember what he did... actually, I'm not sure I ever knew..." Miranda stopped to think, "no, I don't think I did."

"You never asked?"

"He was so out of the picture, I guess it never occurred to any of us to inquire."

"You don't sound British at all." Miranda could still amaze Andy.

"I have also lived in France, Germany and America, accents are not a permanent thing, you know."

"I've only ever lived in Cleveland, Ohio and New York City. I have seen such a tiny tiny portion of the world in comparison to you."

"I am about twice your age." Miranda cringed inwardly.

"Yeah, but by the time you were my age you'd already seen way more of the world." Andy said. "So, why exactly did you leave home? Like, you wanted more, but was there something that really sealed the conviction?"

Miranda continued, "my sister was pregnant, she was 17 and becoming my mother and I knew I didn't want that. I didn't want to just have babies and get stuck in a tiny little house in a tiny little place that no one has ever heard of."

Andy nodded, enraptured by Miranda. "How did you do it? Did you have a job? Did you tell your mother or your siblings you were leaving?"

"You are absolutely full of questions."

"You are full of amazingness."

Miranda smirked playfully. "You're ridiculous."

"Come on, keep going with the story!"

"No. Story time is over, it's time for dinner."

Andy began to sleep over increasingly often. Miranda would fall asleep instantly and Andy would toss and turn for about a half an hour before finally falling asleep, at which point Miranda would cuddle up to her.

She usually stayed over when the girls were with their father, but sometimes she'd stay over and then just hide out in Miranda's room until the girls and Miranda left.

One evening when Miranda and Andy were each at their respective homes, Miranda was in the sitting room, reading and waiting for the book.

It was late and she didn't expect anyone else to be awake, so when Cassidy peeked around the corner and said, "mom?" Miranda jumped, dropping her reading material.

Cassidy looked down at what Miranda had dropped and her eyes widened in shock when she saw that it was an issue of 52.

Miranda smiled, "you startled me, Cassidy." She waved her in, "come here, sit with me."

Cassidy entered the sitting room tentatively and sat on the couch next to Miranda. Miranda leaned down and picked up the comic and held it up for Cassidy to see, "Andy got me hooked on this, have you read these?"

"Why would you ask me that?" Cassidy asked, startled.

"It seems like something you might like." Miranda shrugged, "I saw those superhero movies in your bedroom and this is a whole comic book series about different superheroes. They really hook you in once you read one of them because the storylines are all intertwined so you have to keep reading."

Cassidy couldn't help but smile dumbfoundedly. "You saw the movies in my room?"

"Yes. I do go into you girls' rooms from time to time." Miranda smiled and added, "if I'm feeling brave. What are you doing up so late?" Miranda stroked the flame read hair of her daughter lovingly.

Cassidy wrapped her arms around Miranda and hugged her tightly, "I just love you, mom."

Miranda wrapped her arms around Cassidy, smiling hugely. "I love you, too, Cassidy."

Cassidy let go of Miranda and sat back. "So, I've been kind of seeing a boy."

The next day, Caroline, Cassidy and Andy went to the park. Caroline had gone off to another part of the park to draw with her instructor and Andy and Cassidy sat together in the park playing Magic.

"So I went downstairs last night, I was thirsty and was going to get a glass of water and I saw the sitting room light on so I thought I'd say goodnight or whatever." Cassidy yawned. "And I caught her reading one of the 52s I gave you! I was, like, so stunned, right? And she was telling me all about the story. Isn't that crazy?"

"So crazy." Andy smiled, "but see, I told you that your mom would be open minded about it."

"Yeah." Cassidy laid down a card, "and I told her about Brady. I didn't tell her about Magic though. And I def don't want Caroline to know about Magic, for sure."

"Then we have to pack up quickly, I see her on the horizon." Andy waved at Caroline while Cassidy shoved the cards into Andy's bag.

"Ready to go?" Caroline shifted her backpack.

When the three of them returned to the townhouse, they were surprised to see that Miranda was home.

"Hi mom, bye mom." Cassidy kissed her cheek and headed for the stairs.

"Homework time." Caroline kissed the other cheek and followed her sister.

Miranda smiled at Andy playfully, "I suppose you have a kiss on the cheek for me too?"

"Nope," Andy stepped forward and pressed a soft kiss to her lips, feeling Miranda's lips turn in a smile.

Miranda took Andy's hand and lead her into the sitting room to sit down. "I've been thinking. You spend most of your time here, most of your nights here. It seems kind of silly to me that you should be paying for an apartment when you're hardly ever there."

Andy smiled, "it seems silly, does it?"

"The girls seem to like you very much, and I love you, obviously and the house is so big."

"Miranda, are you asking what I think you're asking?" Andy was afraid to think it.

"Andrea, would you like to move in?" Miranda asked, almost shyly. "I know we haven't been dating for very long but I am a woman of action. And of course, you can say no and I won't be offended."

"Miranda, I would love to." Andy smiled, "but what about the girls?"

"I talked to them about it. About your moving in. I didn't talk to them about my relationship with you, I figured that would happen in due time. Or maybe they'll just go off to college and not question why their nanny stuck around."

Andy laughed.

"You'll have your own room, of course."

Andy smiled, shaking her head, "I love you so much."
