The perpetually charming
Daf recently made me lunch. It consisted of pasta and other bits, and so I'm going to try to remember what the other bits were, as they were really rather good.
I *think* it was: garlic, oil, chilis, lemon zest, and grated goat's cheese. Quam dilecta.

Your list of other bits calls to mind pasta a friend once made; I recall there were peas and vinegar (red wine, IIRC) and probably some browned garlic, among other ingredients. It was a fridge-clearing in the finest tradition, and it was lovely.
Haven't really done much on the improvisation front, though. I don't think tossing parsley into a soup I'm going to try (instead of the suggested basil) really counts. :-)
