I wouldn't say you returned it. It's one thing to kindly plan for the fact that your gift might not work for the recipient. It's another to have it thrown in your face.

Also, I had to switch which church I attended because I got sucked into the P&P fanfic. :P

What should I say instead, though? The big blank expanse of the inside of the card is staring at me accusingly.

I'd make some joke about the baby (or whatever the gift was for). Chit chatty stuff.
