Baby!fic, wtf?

Why is SGA baby!fic almost always happy? Or rather, slash-centered baby!fic, as I haven't seen much pregnancy/childrearing fic centered around the Atlantis women, but I'd like to hope it's a bit more realistic. I can think of one mpreg where Rodney had an abortion, but other than that one, mpreg or not, the boys always keep the baby. I understand ( Read more... )

Good point. I wish I had something more constructive than that to add!

I admit a weakness for the "flash forward X number of years to Atlantis as a flourishing city" where people have kids because life there is actually good... but...

I dunno, the babyfics do mostly have a sort of soft-focus unreality about them. I don't read Mpreg, though, so I imagine I've avoided a large proportion of them.

(Disclaimer: I actually wrote kidfic (in another fandom) so I guess I shouldn't throw stones, but it was never magical get-together babyfic, so I'm safe there at least.)

Because most babyfic is written by people who don't have babies, and it really, really shows.

Heh, true. I kind of want to see a parent write realistic toddlerfic. Where McKay junior nearly blows up one of the labs in a temper tantrum, or how Sheppard junior breaks his arm trying to fight like Ronon and Teyla junior almost gets trampled trying to run with the Maries and eventually Carter gives the order to turn the Wraith holding cells into a play area because it's the only way to keep them safe and out of the way.

This has been circling around in my brain since I read this. So, I had a go at it.

This is what happens with Rodney's son gets loose in the lab. I'll let you know when I come up with something for the other ones.

Oh, that was lovely. I especially love the fact that McKay was trying to exert discipline and that no one was overtaken by the kiddie cuteness factor. The kid messes up and people are frustrated and discipline is exerted and life moves on. It felt *real*.

What mecurtin" said. I believe that a lot of fen who love baby!fic also don't want to see the hard parts about it, which means those of us who write it at least semi-realistically don't necessarily get the feedback that says 'keep going.'

Though I can't complain, since the Raising Madison series isn't all sweetness and light and has gotten a good chunk of feedback on it. shrug My two pennies.

The only baby!fic I've ever read, and I only read it because it started out as a slash AU, is Sheafrotherdon's 'Farm in Iowa' series. It seems realistic, even though I know nothing about kids.

I haven't read Farm in Iowa yet; I'm waiting until I have a weekend to just read it straight through. Also I like to delude myself into thinking that reading short fics throughout the day isn't as big a time commitment as reading a series and then moving on.

Yeah, I really loved Iowa at first. My love decreased exponentially with every "adorable" Flynn situation, and I haven't been able to bring myself to read it ever since the next kid (or the idea of the next one, rather) came on the scene.

I have to admit that I've stopped reading it too, right about the same plotline that you mentioned.

Baby!fic and mpreg scares the hell outta me! But, seriously, one question: Why are almost all the babies girls? In the Family Way is good, but it really needs to get finished already!

Some dark side mpregs that I've been able to tolerate:

Shattered Dreams

Incubator

And the best kid!fic (in my opinion really)
Little Man Sheppard

Bigger question, why does so much mpreg turn the guys into women? You're pregnant, so all of a sudden you're going to be getting in touch with your softer side? I read slash 'cause I like to see men together, kthxbai.

HA! Tell me about it

I read slash 'cause I like to see men together, kthxbai.
Yabetcha! And leave out the smooshy romance, thank you. Because, sorry kids, it's not about how you want to be treated on a date. It's about the boys, and in character, please.

The ridiulousness explained here. Warning! Ghetto ass crack!fic... in case you missed it.
