"Where? Show me! Show me!" Four-year-old Kyle was standing on the pew between Justin and his mom and practically bouncing with excitement.

Mrs Taylor pushed Kyle down to a sitting position. "Shh!"

"Wait till we stand, and I'll lift you up," Justin whispered.

Beside him, Nicki elbowed her older brother in the ribs. "This isn't a jungle gym! It's church!"

"Then we might as well be having some sort of fun," he said back and then muttered, "Because we certainly won't be having it otherwise."

His mother gave him a withering look.

Justin grinned at her. "I'm so proud of Phil!"

Phil, the oldest of the Taylor kids, was getting confirmed at the Saint Paul Cathedral that evening, and the whole family, well, minus Mr Taylor, was there to congratulate him, including little Kyle, who had no idea what it was all about. Justin, who was not at all proud of Phil, was thoroughly bored, and could have thought a million other ways-better ways-to spend his time, occupied himself with trying to get his siblings to misbehave during the mass.

Before they had left the house, he had raided the back of the pantry and found a stash of little wrapped candies that were leftover from Easter. Apparently Mom had been holding out on them; something he didn't really appreciate. He had stuffed two handfuls in his pockets and then once mass started, and with his finger to his lips, began passing them one at a time to Kyle.

Kyle was a bad secret keeper, and Nicki was even worse. She spotted Justin with the candy about ten minutes into the game, and her eyes widened. Justin shut her up by shoving five into her hands. Nicki may be a lousy know-it-all, but she was still a candy-loving kid at heart.

Unfortunately, Justin should have grabbed a third handful, because when he ran out, Kyle looked up at him with sad eyes and stuck his lip out. Justin had seen the face a million times and knew what it meant.

"It's okay," he whispered, giving his baby brother a little hug. "When we get home I know where Mom keeps all the treats! It won't be long now!"

Apparently, this didn't matter to Kyle, and big tears spilled onto his cheeks. "M-more, Justin!" he cried.

This got their mother's attention, and she looked down at Kyle. "What's going on?" she said in a hushed voice.

Justin grabbed Kyle's hand and pulled him up. "I'll take him out into the hall. We'll be back."

"Justin, this isn't St Steven's. It's a big church, and I don't want you getting lost!" Mrs Taylor said.

Just then, Kyle let out a piercing wail.

"Okay, fine," Mrs Taylor said and let Justin and Kyle pass by her in the pew. "Don't be long, and stay just outside this row, okay?"

He rolled his eyes at her. "I promise." Just as he was about to leave the pew, he caught Nicki's eyes. She was smiling at him and looking very pleased with herself. What she didn't realize, Justin thought, was that while she was sitting and listening to some boring mass, he would be out in the hallway... not listening to the mass. It didn't matter if he had to deal with his crying brother. As long as he was out of mass, he had won. He grinned back at her and then and then led Kyle down the aisle toward the outer hall.
