Gangs of New York

I saw Gangs of New York last night. I wish I hadn’t. That was one of the most violent movies I have ever seen. Sure, Daniel Day-Lewis is brilliant (what a chameleon that actor is), and it was a well-made movie, but the violence was just way too much for me ( Read more... )

*hugs* I absolutely cannot watch violent movies, unless it's Gross Point Blank or something. I can handle the violence in Buffy & Angel & Farscape pretty well, but anything "real" makes me cringe. I had to close my eyes through most of Fight Club. Also, I'm a total scardy cat, so I avoid horror movies too. And did I tell you I had a nightmare that the thing that was chasing Ged in the Earthsea books was chasing me? I ran upstairs to my parents room. Of course...I was probably 13 or so. :)

Yeah, exactly. Fight Club is another movie that I could have gone my whole life without seeing. I don't see the point.

That thing that chased Ged was pretty scary, too, mostly because you didn't know what it was, but I was nasty. I can definitely see having a nightmare about that!

My nightmare was about some guy getting into my car and making me drive home so he could rob me. It wasn't actually very violent, but it was really vivid and I was terrified. After I woke up I shivered under the blankets and turned on NPR, even though it wasn't time to get up yet. Yikes! I don't have nightmares too often, thankfully. :)

I had the same reaction to Gangs of New York....did *not* like it in the least. Even the acting was for me, overshadowed by the amount of violence & the meanness which accompanied it.....sigh......

The meanness, hatred, and cruelty, yes. I think Scorsese was heavyhanded with the film. I need to remember that just because a movie gets a bunch of Oscar nominations doesn't mean its a film I want to see.
