My car almost hit a deer yesterday. unnamed525 was driving us in my Jeep Cherokee down to his father and stepmother's house in rural Ohio (border of Fayette and Pickaway Counties). It was close to 2pm, in broad daylight. Two does bounded across the road in front of us. As we watched them start to run into the field to our right, two other does followed ( Read more... )

It was simply in a state of frozen terror. I believe the word from Watership Down is "thrair".

I believe the word is "tharn," but it's been a while since I've read the book.

I have never come so close to hitting a deer.

Welcome to life in the country. Before long, you'll have lost track of how many times you've almost hit on & only count the ones where either hit or end up in a ditch avoiding one. :-) (Note- generally goes easier with the insurance company if you hit the deer rather than swerve & put yourself in a ditch. Goofy, I know, but true. Plus, if you kill said deer, if you call your local game warden, you can keep it. Venison all winter is a good thing)

'Tis true. I've enjoyed many a meal of road-kill dear.

Also, I think some places will take unwanted eadible road kill to homeless shelters. May be worth checking.

Yes, I think you can keep it if you call the proper authorities. I'm vegetarian, but unnamed525 likes venison. It's certainly better than letting the meat go to waste.

Aw, somebody beat me to "tharn..." But you had the right sort of sound with "thrair." "Hrair" is the Lapine word for "many" and "thrair" sounds similar.

[I lack a rabbit icon, alas]
